Keith Elkington Transport Decarbonises with Telematics and Driver Tech

Keith Elkington Transport, a leader in foodservice equipment hauling, is on a mission to become a greener company. They recently invested in an integrated Webfleet telematics and DVS video camera system, aiming to enhance driver safety and significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

While electric vehicles weren’t an option due to the weight of their cargo (large refrigeration units, ovens, etc.), Keith Elkington wasn’t discouraged. They took these steps:

  • Upgraded their fleet: They invested in new, lighter Sprinter Chassis cabs that boast better aerodynamics, Euro 6 engines, and Mercedes Blue Efficiency technology.
  • Implemented Webfleet with OptiDrive 360: This system provides real-time feedback in the cab, helping drivers improve fuel efficiency by monitoring and addressing harsh braking, speeding, cornering, and idling. Drivers have embraced the system, fostering friendly competition for better driving habits.
  • Installed in-cab cameras: These AI-powered cameras initially helped identify bad habits like texting and eating at the wheel. However, driver behaviour has improved significantly, making these incidents rare.

The Challenge

“This is an excellent example of how conventional fleets can achieve significant carbon reduction without going electric,” said Jonny Wiggins of Fleet Trak, the system installers.

The benefits go beyond just a greener fleet:

  • Reduced Fuel Costs: Improved driving habits are expected to lead to significant fuel cost savings.
  • Enhanced Safety: Webfleet’s Tachograph Manager allows for automatic driver data downloads, eliminating unnecessary depot trips. Electronic driver ID ensures the right driver is in the right vehicle.
  • FORS Silver Accreditation and DVS Compliance: Front and rear-facing Mantis cameras on HGVs contribute to achieving FORS silver accreditation and the upcoming Direct Vision Standard (DVS) requirement in London.

Keith Elkington Transport demonstrates how innovation and smart technology can pave the way for a sustainable future in the hauling industry.
